More than a bright blue boat
The luzzu is one of the familiar sights of Malta’s fishing harbours. A University of Malta feature on traditional boat decoration describes how colour once helped identify a boat’s home community. The moustache-shaped band, or mustacc, could carry local meaning as well as an owner’s personal touch.
Eyes looking out to sea
Painted eyes are associated with protection for the people aboard. The same feature records other decorations too, from fish and flowers to religious symbols. There is no need to treat every boat as identical: individual choices are part of the tradition.
A good conversation to start
For a young angler, a harbour visit can be about more than catching a fish. Notice the boats, ask respectful questions and look at the work that keeps them afloat. Leave working areas clear and give fishing crews space. Our lessons are shore-based, but they take place beside a much wider maritime story.
